Is It Really ADHD? Or Something Else?

Difficulty focusing is not automatically ADHD. How anxiety, perfectionism, depression, and burnout mimic ADHD — and why diagnosis matters.

Forgetting things, living in browser tabs, waiting until the deadline — someone may have suggested ADHD. Maybe. Difficulty focusing is also a core feature of anxiety, depression, perfectionism, chronic stress, and sleep deprivation. A symptom list is not a diagnosis.

ADHD is real and still underdiagnosed in women, in high-compensating adults, and in communities with less access to care. Diagnosis rates have also risen, and some of that is confusion with look-alike conditions.

Four common mimics

Anxiety consumes working memory. Perfectionism creates avoidance that looks like inattention. Depression slows cognition and motivation. Burnout strips executive function.

Stimulants improve focus in most people, with or without ADHD. They can also worsen anxiety. That is why we take differential diagnosis seriously before we prescribe. See our ADHD treatment page.

Roughly half of adults with ADHD also have an anxiety disorder. Comorbidity is common. Sequencing treatment matters. If you have been on stimulants without a thorough evaluation, it is fair to ask for one.
