What to know

What an intensive outpatient program is

An intensive outpatient program, or IOP, sits between regular outpatient care and a hospital stay. It is more structured and more frequent than a weekly therapy or medication visit. But you still sleep at home, and many people keep up with parts of work, school, or family life.

Contact us for current program details, schedule, and to find out whether IOP is the right level of care for you.

Who IOP may help

  • People whose symptoms aren’t easing with weekly outpatient care alone
  • People stepping down from a hospital or residential program who want steady support
  • People who need more structure for a while, but not 24-hour care

IOP is not the right fit for everyone. If you need round-the-clock monitoring or are not safe right now, a higher level of care is the right place to start.

How our psychiatric care fits around IOP

Our board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners provide evaluation and medication management for ages 13 and up. Our licensed clinical social workers provide talk therapy for adults. Your IOP and your psychiatric care can work together, so your plan stays consistent from one step to the next.

Your first visit

It starts with a 60–90 minute comprehensive evaluation. We listen, review your history, and talk honestly about which level of care makes sense — IOP, regular outpatient visits, or something more intensive.

Coordinating your care

With your permission, we coordinate with your primary care provider, therapist, or a program you are leaving, so nothing gets lost in the handoff.

IOP is not emergency care. Bedre Health does not offer emergency or urgent appointments. In an emergency, call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Questions

IOP in Massachusetts: common questions

What is an intensive outpatient program (IOP)?

An intensive outpatient program is a step up from weekly therapy or medication visits. It offers more structured, more frequent care while you keep living at home. It is less intensive than a hospital stay or residential program, and it is not emergency care.

Do you offer an intensive outpatient program in Winchester, MA?

Yes. Bedre Health offers IOP alongside our psychiatric care. Contact us for current program details, schedule, and to find out whether IOP is the right level of care for you.

How do I know if IOP is the right level of care?

IOP may fit when weekly outpatient care isn't enough, or when you're stepping down from a hospital or residential program. It is not right for anyone who needs emergency or 24-hour care. We talk it through with you and recommend the level of care that fits.

Is IOP the same as inpatient or emergency care?

No. IOP is outpatient care — you go home each day. If you are in danger or need immediate help, call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency room. Bedre Health does not offer emergency or urgent appointments.

Does insurance cover IOP in Massachusetts?

Coverage depends on your plan. We are in-network with several plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Point32Health, Optum, Evernorth, Mass General Brigham Health Plan, and Tricare. We verify your benefits before you start.
